Te escribe Pablo. Como bien sabes, estoy preso por servir a Jesucristo.

Recibe mis saludos y los del hermano Timoteo. ²También saludamos a toda la iglesia que se reúne en tu casa, y a la hermana Apia y al hermano Arquipo, nuestro compañero de trabajo. ³Deseamos de todo corazón que Dios nuestro Padre, y el Señor Jesucristo, los llenen siempre de amor y paz.

Pablo ora por Filemón

⁴Filemón, siempre doy gracias a mi Dios al acordarme de ti en mis oraciones, ⁵porque me han dicho que amas al Señor Jesús y confías en él, y que sientes el mismo amor por todos los que forman parte del pueblo de Dios. ⁶Tú confías en el Señor, lo mismo que nosotros. Por eso le pido a Dios que sigas confiando en él hasta que conozcas todo el bien que podemos hacer, gracias al amor que sentimos por Cristo.

Pablo pide un favor para Onésimo

⁷Hermano Filemón, estoy muy contento y animado de saber que amas mucho a los demás, pues tú has consolado y animado a todos los que pertenecen al pueblo de Dios. ^8-9Yo ya soy viejo, y ahora estoy en la cárcel por servir a Jesucristo. Yo sé que tú me amas. Por eso, aunque te lo podría ordenar, pues Cristo me ha dado esa autoridad, prefiero pedirte que me hagas el siguiente favor: ¹⁰Te ruego que recibas bien a Onésimo. Para mí, él es como un hijo, pues yo le anuncié la buena noticia aquí en la cárcel.

¹¹Antes, Onésimo fue para ti un esclavo inútil, pero ahora nos es útil a ti y a mí. ¹²Por eso ahora te lo envío de vuelta, y espero que lo recibas como si me recibieras a mí. ¹³Me hubiera gustado que se quedara conmigo, para que me ayudara en lugar tuyo mientras yo siga preso por anunciar la buena noticia. ¹⁴Pero no haré nada sin que tú estés de acuerdo, para que el favor que te pido no te resulte una obligación.

¹⁵Tal vez Onésimo se alejó de ti por algún tiempo, para que ahora sea tuyo para siempre. ¹⁶Sólo que ahora ya no lo tendrás como a un esclavo, sino como a un hermano muy querido, lo cual es mucho mejor. Yo lo quiero mucho, pero tú debes quererlo aún más. Quiérelo como a un miembro de la familia del Señor, y no como a cualquier persona.

¹⁷Si realmente me consideras tu hermano, te pido que lo recibas como si me recibieras a mí. ¹⁸Si Onésimo te hizo algo malo, o si te debe algo, cóbramelo a mí. ¹⁹Con esta firma, que es de mi puño y letra, me comprometo a pagarte todo. Aunque, francamente, no deberías cobrarme nada, pues todo lo que tienes, y todo lo que eres, me lo debes a mí.

²⁰Hermano Filemón, hazme este favor, pero no lo hagas por mí, sino por tu amor al Señor. Tú y yo somos hermanos: ¡dame esa tranquilidad!

²¹Te escribo porque estoy seguro de que harás lo que te pido, y mucho más. ²²Y aprovecho la ocasión para pedirte que me prepares un lugar donde quedarme, porque espero que, por las oraciones de ustedes, Dios me deje salir de la cárcel para ir a visitarlos.

Introducción

1Hace mucho, mucho tiempo, los profetas comunicaron el mensaje de Dios a nuestros antepasados. Lo hicieron muchas veces y de muchas maneras. ²Pero ahora, en estos últimos tiempos, Dios nos lo ha comunicado por medio de su Hijo. Porque por medio de él Dios creó el universo, y lo hizo dueño de todas las cosas. ³El Hijo de Dios nos muestra el poder y la grandeza de su Padre. El Hijo de Dios es igual en todo a su Padre, y con su gran poder hace que el universo siga existiendo. El Hijo de Dios logró que Dios nos perdonara nuestros pecados, y después subió al cielo para sentarse a la derecha del trono de su Padre.

El Hijo de Dios es superior a los ángeles

⁴El Hijo de Dios llegó a ser superior a los ángeles, pues Dios le dio un nombre mucho más importante que el de ellos. ⁵Porque nunca Dios le dijo a ningún ángel:

«Tú eres mi Hijo;
desde hoy soy tu padre.»

Tampoco dijo de ningún ángel:

«Yo seré para él como un padre,
y él será para mí como un Hijo.»

⁶Y cuando Dios envió a su Hijo a este mundo, ordenó:

«Que todos mis ángeles lo adoren.»

⁷Además, cuando Dios habla acerca de los ángeles, dice:

«Mis ángeles son el viento,
y mis sirvientes son relámpagos.»

⁸Pero, cuando habla de su Hijo, Dios dice:

«Tu reinado durará para siempre,
y usarás tu poder en favor de la justicia.
⁹Te complaces en lo bueno,
y rechazas la injusticia.
Yo te declaro mi rey favorito,
¡el rey más feliz de la tierra!»

¹⁰Y también dice:

«Señor,
en el principio
tú afirmaste la tierra;
tú mismo hiciste los cielos,
¹¹pero se irán gastando,
como la ropa,
y un día los destruirás.

»Pero tú te mantendrás firme;
¹²siempre serás el mismo,
y tus años no tendrán fin.»

¹³Dios nunca le dijo a ningún ángel:

«Siéntate a la derecha de mi trono,
hasta que yo derrote a tus enemigos.»

¹⁴Porque los ángeles son solamente espíritus que sirven a Dios, y él los envía para ayudar a toda la gente que Dios habrá de salvar.

La salvación es importante

2Por eso debemos poner más interés en el mensaje de salvación que hemos oído, para no apartarnos del camino que Dios nos señala. ²Si el mensaje que anunciaron los ángeles resultó ser verdad, y quienes no lo obedecieron recibieron el castigo que merecían, ³con más razón seremos castigados nosotros si no reconocemos el gran valor de la salvación que él nos ofrece. Porque el Señor Jesús mismo fue el primero en comunicar el mensaje de salvación, y después, los que oyeron ese mensaje nos demostraron que era verdad. ⁴Dios también nos lo demostró por medio de muchas señales y de acciones maravillosas, y también con milagros. Además, cuando lo hizo, les dio el Espíritu Santo a quienes él se lo quiso dar.

Jesús nos salva

⁵Dios no ha puesto a los ángeles como jefes del mundo^[a] en que vamos a vivir en el futuro. En ese mundo ⁶el jefe será otro. Pues la Biblia dice:

«Dios, ¿qué somos los mortales
para que pienses en nosotros
y nos tomes en cuenta?

⁷»¡Nos creaste casi iguales
a los ángeles!
Nos trataste como a reyes;
⁸nos diste plena autoridad
sobre todo lo que hiciste;
nos diste dominio
sobre toda tu creación».^[b]

Y si Dios le dio «dominio sobre toda la creación», eso quiere decir que nada de lo creado queda fuera de su gobierno. Claro, todavía no vemos que él gobierne sobre todas las cosas. ⁹Pero Dios nos ama y envió a Jesús a morir para salvarnos. Por eso, aunque Dios permitió que, por algún tiempo, Jesús fuera menos importante que los ángeles, ahora Jesús ha recibido gloria y honor.

¹⁰Dios hizo todas las cosas para él mismo, y quiere que su gloria la compartan todos los que lo aman y obedecen. Para eso, Dios tenía que hacer perfecto a Jesucristo y dejarlo morir, pues Jesucristo es el Salvador de ellos. ¹¹Todos los que aman y obedecen a Dios son sus hijos, y Dios es padre de todos ellos. Y como Jesús también es Hijo de Dios, no se avergüenza de tratarlos como hermanos, ¹²pues él le dijo a Dios:

«Cuando mi pueblo se junte
para adorarte en el templo,
yo les hablaré de ti,
y te cantaré alabanzas.»

¹³También dice:

«Confiaré en Dios.»

Y añade:

«Aquí estoy, con los hijos
que Dios me ha dado.»

¹⁴Nosotros somos seres de carne y hueso. Por eso Jesús se hizo igual a nosotros. Sólo así podía morir para vencer al diablo, que tenía poder para matar a hombres y a mujeres. ¹⁵Con su muerte, Jesús dio libertad a los que se pasaban la vida con miedo a la muerte. ¹⁶Queda claro que Jesús no vino para ayudar a los ángeles, sino a todos los descendientes de Abraham. ¹⁷Para poder ayudarlos, tenía que hacerse igual a ellos. Por eso Jesús es un Jefe de sacerdotes en quien se puede confiar, pues está lleno de amor para servir a Dios. Además, por medio de su muerte, Jesús logró que Dios nos perdonara nuestros pecados. ¹⁸Y como Jesús mismo sufrió, y el diablo le puso trampas para hacerlo pecar, ahora, cuando el diablo nos pone trampas, Jesús puede ayudarnos a todos.

Jesús y Moisés

3Hermanos, Dios los ha llamado a ustedes para que sean su pueblo elegido. Por eso, pónganse a pensar seriamente en quién es Jesús: ¡Él es nuestro apóstol^[c] y nuestro Jefe de sacerdotes! ²Dios le encargó que nos ayudara, y él lo obedeció, así como Moisés también obedeció cuando Dios le ordenó ayudar a todo su pueblo.^[d]

³Pero Dios le dio a Jesús más honra que a Moisés. Es como cuando se construye una casa: el que la construye es más importante que la casa misma. ⁴Toda casa ha sido construida por alguien, pero Dios es quien ha hecho todo lo que existe. ⁵Moisés sirvió a Dios y lo obedeció en todo, pues ayudó al pueblo de Dios tal como se le ordenó, y anunció al pueblo lo que Dios iba a decir en el futuro. ⁶Pero Cristo, que es el Hijo de Dios, es obediente y ayuda a este pueblo de Dios, que somos nosotros. Y nosotros somos parte de ese pueblo, si seguimos creyendo firmemente y con alegría en la salvación que recibiremos.

La obediencia

⁷Por eso hay que hacer lo que el Espíritu Santo dice:

«Si hoy escuchan la voz de Dios,
⁸no sean tercos,
como aquellos israelitas,
que no quisieron obedecerlo
en el desierto.
Ellos quisieron ver hasta dónde
soportaría Dios su desobediencia.

»Por eso Dios les dijo:
⁹Aunque los traté bien
durante cuarenta años,
sus antepasados
me pusieron a prueba en el desierto.
¹⁰Entonces me enojé,
y les hice ver
que vivían en el error,
pues no obedecían mis mandamientos.
¹¹Por eso, ya enojado decidí:
“No voy a permitirles
entrar en la tierra prometida,
donde los habría hecho descansar.”»^[e]

¹²¡Cuidado, hermanos! No piensen en lo malo, ni dejen de confiar en el Dios que vive para siempre, para que no se aparten de él. ¹³Al contrario, mientras aún queda tiempo, cada uno debe animar al otro a seguir confiando. Así nadie dejará de obedecer a Dios, ni pensará que, si peca, hace el bien. ¹⁴Al principio, cuando confiamos en Cristo, nos hicimos compañeros suyos; y si no dejamos de confiar en él, seguiremos siendo sus compañeros siempre. ¹⁵Por eso la Biblia dice:

«Si hoy escuchan la voz de Dios,
no sean tercos,
como aquellos israelitas
que no quisieron obedecerlo.»

¹⁶¿Y quiénes fueron los que escucharon a Dios y no quisieron obedecerlo? ¡Pues todos aquellos que Moisés sacó de Egipto! ¹⁷¿Y con quiénes estuvo Dios enojado durante cuarenta años? ¡Pues con los que pecaron y luego cayeron muertos en el desierto! ¹⁸¿Y a quiénes les juró Dios que no les daría descanso en la región de Canaán? ¡Pues a los que no le obedecieron! ¹⁹Y en verdad, no pudieron entrar en Canaán y descansar, porque no confiaron en Dios.

4Por eso, mientras siga en pie la promesa de descansar con Dios, debemos tener cuidado. Sería una lástima que alguno de ustedes no pudiera recibir de Dios ese descanso. ²Porque nosotros oímos la buena noticia, igual que aquellos israelitas que salieron de Egipto. Sólo que a ellos no les sirvió de nada oírla, porque no creyeron en el mensaje. ³Nosotros, en cambio, los que sí hemos creído en la buena noticia, disfrutaremos de la paz y de la tranquilidad que Dios nos ha prometido. Pero a los que no creyeron, Dios les dijo:

«Por eso, ya enojado decidí:
“No voy a permitirles
entrar en la tierra prometida,
donde los haré descansar.”»

Dios dijo esto, refiriéndose a su descanso cuando terminó de crear el mundo. ⁴Porque en alguna parte de la Biblia se habla así del día sábado:

«En el séptimo día
Dios descansó de todo su trabajo.»

⁵Y en cuanto a este punto, vuelve a decir:

«Ustedes jamás entrarán
en mi lugar de reposo.»

⁶Los primeros en oír la buena noticia desobedecieron a Dios, y por eso no pudieron recibir su descanso. Pero la promesa de Dios sigue en pie, ⁷porque él nos dio una nueva oportunidad, como lo dijo por medio de David en el pasaje de la Biblia, que ya mencionamos:

«Si hoy escuchan la voz de Dios,
no sean tan tercos.»

⁸Si Josué hubiera podido hacer que los israelitas descansaran realmente en paz y tranquilidad, Dios no habría hablado de otra oportunidad. ⁹Pero todavía esperamos el día en que nosotros, el pueblo de Dios, recibiremos el descanso que Dios nos ha prometido. ¹⁰En ese día, el pueblo de Dios descansará por fin de su trabajo, así como Dios descansó del suyo. ¹¹Por eso, hagamos todo lo posible por obedecer a Dios, para que en ese día recibamos su descanso. No sigamos el ejemplo de los que no creyeron la buena noticia.

¹²Cada palabra que Dios pronuncia tiene poder y tiene vida. La palabra de Dios es más cortante que una espada de dos filos, y penetra hasta lo más profundo de nuestro ser. Allí examina nuestros pensamientos y deseos, y deja en claro si son buenos o malos. ¹³Nada de lo que Dios ha creado puede esconderse de él, pues Dios puede verlo todo con claridad, y ante él seremos responsables de todo lo que hemos hecho.

Jesús es el Jefe de sacerdotes

¹⁴Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, y es nuestro gran Jefe de sacerdotes, que ha subido al cielo. Por eso debemos seguir confiando en él.

¹⁵El diablo le puso a Jesús las mismas trampas que nos pone a nosotros para hacernos pecar, sólo que Jesús nunca pecó. Por eso, él puede entender que nos resulta difícil obedecer a Dios. ¹⁶Así que, cuando tengamos alguna necesidad, acerquémonos con confianza al trono de Dios. Él nos ayudará, porque es bueno y nos ama.

5Dios elige a los jefes de los sacerdotes para que ayuden al pueblo, y para que presenten las ofrendas y sacrificios, para que Dios los perdone. ²Y como a esos sacerdotes también les resulta difícil obedecer a Dios, pueden mostrarse pacientes con los ignorantes y pecadores. ³Por eso tienen que presentar ofrendas y sacrificios, para que Dios perdone los pecados del pueblo, y también los de ellos. ⁴Pero nadie puede ser jefe de los sacerdotes sólo porque así lo quiere, sino que Dios es quien lo elige y le da ese honor. Así lo hizo Dios cuando escogió a Aarón como jefe de los sacerdotes.

⁵Cristo no llegó a ser Jefe de sacerdotes porque así lo quiso, sino que Dios lo eligió y le dio ese honor. Fue Dios quien le dijo:

«Tú eres mi Hijo;
desde hoy soy tu padre.»

⁶En otra parte de la Biblia también le dijo:

«Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,
como lo fue Melquisedec.»

⁷Cuando Cristo estuvo aquí en el mundo, oró mucho a Dios, y con lágrimas le rogó que lo librara de la muerte, pues Dios tenía poder para hacerlo. Y como Cristo siempre fue obediente, Dios contestó su oración. ⁸Aunque él era Hijo de Dios, por medio del sufrimiento aprendió lo que significa obedecer siempre a Dios. ⁹Así, una vez que Cristo hizo todo lo que Dios le mandó, se convirtió en el salvador que da vida eterna a todos los que lo obedecen. ¹⁰Por eso Dios también lo nombró Jefe de sacerdotes, como lo fue Melquisedec.

Aprendamos más acerca de Dios

¹¹Hay mucho más que decir acerca de este asunto, pero no es fácil explicarles a ustedes todo, porque les cuesta mucho entender. ¹²Con el tiempo que llevan de haber creído en la buena noticia, ya deberían ser maestros. Sin embargo, todavía necesitan que se les expliquen las enseñanzas más sencillas acerca de Dios. Parecen niños pequeños, que no pueden comer alimentos sólidos, sino que sólo toman leche. ¹³Son como niños recién nacidos, que aún no pueden distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo. ¹⁴En cambio, los que sí saben distinguir entre lo bueno y lo malo, y están acostumbrados a hacerlo, son como la gente adulta, que ya puede comer alimentos sólidos.

6Por eso, sigamos aprendiendo más y más, hasta que lleguemos a ser cristianos maduros. Dejemos de ocuparnos de las primeras enseñanzas que se nos dieron acerca de Cristo, y no sigamos hablando de cosas simples. Dejemos de hacer lo malo, sigamos a Cristo, y dejemos de pecar para no morir. Ya sabemos que debemos confiar en Dios, ²y que debemos bautizarnos; también sabemos que los que creen en Cristo reciben el Espíritu Santo, que los muertos volverán a vivir, y que habrá un juicio final. ³Claro que todo esto lo seguiremos enseñando, si Dios así nos lo permite.

^4-6Pero los que dejan de creer en Cristo ya no pueden volver a ser amigos de Dios, aunque alguna vez hayan creído que el mensaje de Dios es la verdad, y con gusto lo hayan recibido como un regalo. Si dejan de creer en Cristo, lo que habrán hecho será volver a clavarlo en la cruz y burlarse de él ante todo el mundo. No importa que hayan recibido el Espíritu Santo junto con los demás, ni que hayan sabido lo bueno que es el mensaje de Dios, ni lo poderoso que Dios será en el nuevo mundo, si dejan de creer en Cristo ya no podrán volver a él.

⁷En esto la gente es como un terreno. Los que creen en Cristo son como el terreno que recibe mucha lluvia y produce una buena cosecha para el sembrador, y Dios lo bendice. ⁸Pero los que dejan de creer son como un terreno que sólo produce plantas con espinas: no sirve para nada, y Dios lo maldice. Al final, se le prende fuego.

⁹Mis queridos hermanos, aunque les decimos estas cosas, estamos seguros de que ustedes no han dejado de creer, sino que siguen confiando en Dios. Eso es lo mejor para ustedes, pues así serán salvados. ¹⁰Dios es justo, y nunca olvidará lo que ustedes han hecho, y siguen haciendo, para ayudar a su pueblo elegido. De esa manera, ustedes también demuestran que aman a Dios.

¹¹Deseamos que sigan con ese mismo entusiasmo hasta el fin, para que reciban todo lo bueno que con tanta paciencia esperan recibir. ¹²No queremos que se vuelvan perezosos. Más bien, sin dudar ni un instante sigan el ejemplo de los que confían en Dios, porque así recibirán lo que Dios les ha prometido.

La promesa de Dios

^13-14Dios le hizo a Abraham esta promesa: «Yo te bendeciré mucho, y haré que tengas muchos descendientes.» Cuando Dios le juró a Abraham que cumpliría esta promesa, tuvo que jurar por sí mismo, porque no tenía a nadie más grande por quien jurar. ¹⁵Abraham esperó con paciencia, y Dios cumplió su promesa.

¹⁶Cuando alguien jura, usa el nombre de alguien más importante, para ponerlo por testigo. ¹⁷Por eso, cuando Dios quiso asegurar que cumpliría su promesa, juró que daría lo prometido sin cambiar nada.

¹⁸Ahora bien, como Dios no miente, su promesa y su juramento no pueden cambiar. Esto nos consuela, porque nosotros queremos que Dios nos proteja, y confiamos en que él nos dará lo prometido. ¹⁹Esta confianza nos da plena seguridad; es como el ancla de un barco, que lo mantiene firme y quieto en el mismo lugar. Y esta confianza nos la da Jesucristo, que traspasó la cortina del templo de Dios en el cielo, y entró al lugar más sagrado. ²⁰Lo hizo para dejarnos libre el camino hacia Dios, pues Cristo es para siempre el Jefe de sacerdotes, como lo fue Melquisedec.

Jesús y Melquisedec

7Melquisedec fue rey de Salem y sacerdote del Dios altísimo. Cuando Abraham regresaba de una batalla, en la que había derrotado a unos reyes, Melquisedec salió a recibirlo y lo bendijo. ²Entonces Abraham le dio a Melquisedec la décima parte de todo lo que había ganado en la batalla.

El nombre Melquisedec significa «rey justo», pero también se le llama Rey de Salem, que significa «rey de paz». ³Nadie sabe quiénes fueron sus padres ni sus antepasados, ni tampoco cuándo o dónde nació y murió. Por eso él, como sacerdote, se parece al Hijo de Dios, que es sacerdote para siempre.

⁴Ahora bien, Melquisedec era tan importante que nuestro antepasado Abraham le dio la décima parte de lo que ganó en la batalla. ⁵De acuerdo con la ley de Moisés, si un sacerdote pertenece a la familia de Leví, tiene derecho a recibir la décima parte de todo lo que gana el pueblo. No importa que el sacerdote sea del mismo pueblo o familia; todos por igual tienen que dar la décima parte. ⁶Y aunque Melquisedec no pertenecía a la familia de Leví, recibió la décima parte de lo que había ganado Abraham, a quien Dios le había hecho promesas.

Melquisedec bendijo a Abraham ⁷y, como todos sabemos, el que bendice es más importante que el que recibe la bendición. ⁸Los sacerdotes que ahora reciben la décima parte de lo que ganamos son personas que algún día morirán. Melquisedec, en cambio, sigue vivo, porque la Biblia no dice que haya muerto. ⁹Por eso podemos decir que los sacerdotes de ahora, que pertenecen a la familia de Leví, también le dieron a Melquisedec la décima parte, porque Abraham actuó como su representante. ¹⁰Esto fue así porque todos ellos son descendientes de Abraham. Aunque todavía no habían nacido cuando Abraham se encontró con Melquisedec, de alguna manera todos ellos estaban presentes en Abraham.

Dos clases de sacerdotes

¹¹Dios le dio la ley al pueblo de Israel. Esa ley se hizo pensando en que los sacerdotes de la familia de Leví ayudarían al pueblo a ser perfecto. Pero como aquellos sacerdotes no pudieron hacerlo, fue necesario que apareciera un sacerdote diferente: uno que no fuera descendiente del sacerdote Aarón,^[f] sino como Melquisedec. ¹²Porque si cambia la clase de sacerdote, también cambia la ley.

^13-14Ese sacerdote tan distinto, del cual estamos hablando, es nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Como todos sabemos, él no descendía de la familia de Aarón, sino de la de Judá. La ley de Moisés dice que de esa familia nadie puede ser sacerdote, y nunca un sacerdote ha salido de ella.

¹⁵Todo esto es más fácil de entender si tenemos en cuenta que ese sacerdote diferente es como Melquisedec. ¹⁶Es diferente porque no fue elegido por ser miembro de una familia determinada, sino porque vive para siempre. ¹⁷Acerca de él, dice la Biblia:

«Tú eres sacerdote para siempre,
como lo fue Melquisedec.»

¹⁸Así que la ley de Moisés ha quedado anulada, porque resultó inútil. ¹⁹Esa ley no pudo hacer perfecta a la gente. Por eso, ahora esperamos confiadamente que Dios nos dé algo mucho mejor, y eso nos permite que seamos sus amigos.

El mejor sacerdote

²⁰Además, Dios juró que tendríamos un sacerdote diferente. Los otros sacerdotes fueron nombrados sin que Dios jurara nada; ²¹en cambio, en el caso de Cristo, Dios sí hizo un juramento, pues en la Biblia dice:

«Dios juró:
“Tú eres sacerdote para siempre.”
Y Dios no cambia de idea.»

²²Por eso Jesús nos asegura que ahora tenemos con Dios un pacto mejor. ²³Antes tuvimos muchos sacerdotes, porque ninguno de ellos podía vivir para siempre. ²⁴Pero como Jesús no morirá jamás, no necesita pasarle a ningún otro su oficio de sacerdote. ²⁵Jesús puede salvar para siempre a los que, por medio de él, quieren ser amigos de Dios. Pues vive eternamente, y siempre está pidiendo a Dios por ellos.

²⁶Jesús es el Jefe de sacerdotes que necesitábamos, pues es santo, en él no hay maldad, y nunca ha pecado. Dios lo apartó de los pecadores, lo hizo subir al cielo, y lo puso en el lugar más importante de todos. ²⁷Jesús no es como los otros sacerdotes, que todos los días tienen que matar animales para ofrecérselos a Dios y pedirle perdón por sus propios pecados, y luego tienen que hacer lo mismo por los pecados del pueblo. Por el contrario, cuando Jesús murió por nuestros pecados, ofreció su vida una sola vez y para siempre. ²⁸A los sacerdotes puestos por la ley de Moisés les resulta difícil obedecer a Dios en todo. Pero, después de darnos su ley, Dios juró que nos daría como Jefe de sacerdotes a su Hijo, a quien él hizo perfecto para siempre.

Nuestro Jefe de sacerdotes es mejor

8Lo más importante de todo esto es que tenemos un Jefe de sacerdotes que está en el cielo, sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios. ²Ese sacerdote es Jesucristo, que actúa como sacerdote en el verdadero santuario,^[g] es decir, en el verdadero lugar de adoración, hecho por Dios y no por nosotros los humanos.

³Aquí en la tierra, se nombra a cada jefe de los sacerdotes para presentar a Dios las ofrendas y sacrificios del pueblo. Por eso, también Jesucristo tiene algo que ofrecer a Dios. ⁴Si él estuviera aquí, no sería sacerdote, pues ya tenemos sacerdotes que presentan a Dios las ofrendas que ordena la ley de Moisés. ⁵Pero el trabajo de esos sacerdotes nos da apenas una ligera idea de lo que pasa en el cielo. Por eso, cuando Moisés iba a construir el santuario, Dios le dijo: «Pon mucho cuidado, porque debes hacerlo todo siguiendo el modelo que te mostré en la montaña». ⁶Pero el trabajo que Dios le dio a Jesucristo, nuestro Jefe de sacerdotes, es mucho mejor, y por medio de él tenemos también un pacto mejor, porque en él Dios nos hace mejores promesas.

El antiguo pacto

⁷Si el pacto que Dios hizo antes con el pueblo de Israel hubiera sido perfecto, no habría sido necesario un nuevo pacto. ⁸Pero al ver Dios que el pueblo no le obedecía como él esperaba, dijo:

«Viene el día
en que haré un nuevo pacto
con el pueblo de Israel
y con el pueblo de Judá.

⁹»En el pasado,
tomé de la mano a sus antepasados
y los saqué de Egipto,
y luego hice un pacto con ellos.
Pero no lo cumplieron,
y por eso no me preocupé más por ellos.

¹⁰»Por eso, éste será mi nuevo pacto
con el pueblo de Israel:
haré que mis enseñanzas
las aprendan de memoria,
y que sean la guía de su vida.
Yo seré su Dios,
y ellos serán mi pueblo.
Les juro que así será.

¹¹»Ya no hará falta
que unos sean maestros de otros,
y que les enseñen a conocerme,
porque todos me conocerán,
desde el más joven hasta el más viejo.

¹²»Yo les perdonaré
todas sus maldades,
y nunca más me acordaré
de sus pecados.»

¹³Cuando Dios habla de hacer con nosotros un nuevo pacto, es porque considera viejo el pacto anterior. Y lo que se considera viejo e inútil, ya está a punto de desaparecer.

Los antiguos sacrificios

9En el primer pacto, Dios nos dio reglas para que supiéramos cómo adorarlo. Esas reglas eran para el culto aquí en la tierra. ²El santuario^[h] para ese culto se construyó de la siguiente manera: En su primera parte, llamada el Lugar Santo, estaban el candelabro^[i] y la mesa donde se ponían los panes apartados para Dios. ³Detrás de la segunda cortina estaba la parte llamada Lugar Santísimo, ⁴en donde estaba el altar de oro para quemar incienso, y también el cofre del pacto, que estaba totalmente recubierto de oro. En el cofre había una jarra de oro, que contenía maná;^[j] el bastón de Aarón, que había vuelto a florecer, y las tablas con los diez mandamientos. ⁵Encima del cofre se pusieron las estatuas de dos seres alados, los cuales cubrían con sus alas la tapa del cofre y representaban la presencia de Dios. Pero de momento no hace falta entrar en detalles.

⁶Así estaban dispuestas todas las cosas en el santuario. Todos los días, los sacerdotes entraban al Lugar Santo para celebrar el culto. ⁷Pero en el Lugar Santísimo sólo podía entrar el jefe de los sacerdotes, y esto, sólo una vez al año. Entraba llevando la sangre de los animales, que él y el pueblo ofrecían para pedir perdón a Dios cuando pecaban sin darse cuenta. ⁸De este modo el Espíritu Santo da a entender que, cuando aún existía el santuario, la entrada al Lugar Santísimo no le estaba permitida a cualquiera. ⁹Todo esto se hizo así para mostrarnos lo que ahora es más importante: No podemos sentirnos perdonados sólo por haber ofrecido ofrendas y sacrificios en el culto. ¹⁰Todo esto son reglas que tienen que ver con comidas, bebidas y ceremonias de purificación, que nos preparan para el culto. Las reglas indican lo que se debe hacer, pero no nos ayudan a cambiar nuestra manera de vivir. Esas reglas sirven sólo mientras Dios no las cambie por algo mejor.

El nuevo sacrificio

¹¹Pero ya Cristo vino y se ha convertido en el Jefe de sacerdotes, y a él le debemos todo lo bueno que ahora nos pasa. Porque el santuario donde él es sacerdote, es mejor y perfecto. No lo hizo ningún ser humano, así que no es de este mundo. ¹²Cristo no entró a ese santuario para ofrecer a Dios la sangre de animales, sino para ofrecer su propia sangre. Entró una sola vez y para siempre; de ese modo, de una vez por todas nos libró del pecado.

¹³De acuerdo con la religión judía, las personas que están impuras no pueden rendirle culto a Dios. Pero serán consideradas puras si se les rocía la sangre de chivos y toros, y las cenizas de una becerra sacrificada. ¹⁴Pues si todo eso tiene poder, más poder tiene la sangre de Cristo. Porque por medio del Espíritu, que vive para siempre, Cristo se ofreció a sí mismo a Dios como sacrificio sin mancha ni pecado. Su sangre nos purifica, para que estemos seguros de que hemos sido perdonados, y para que podamos servir a Dios, que vive para siempre.

El nuevo pacto

¹⁵Así, por medio de Jesucristo, entramos en un nuevo pacto con Dios. Porque Jesucristo murió para que Dios nos perdonara todo lo malo que hicimos cuando servíamos al primer pacto. Y por medio de su muerte, también los que hemos sido elegidos por Dios recibiremos la salvación eterna que él nos ha prometido.

^16-17Este nuevo pacto es como un testamento.^[k] Si la persona que hace un testamento no ha muerto todavía, ese documento aún no sirve de nada. ¹⁸Por eso, cuando Dios hizo el primer pacto, se mataron varios animales. ¹⁹Primero, Moisés anunció los mandamientos de la ley a todo el pueblo. Luego tomó lana roja y una rama de hisopo, y las mojó en agua mezclada con sangre de toros y de chivos. Después roció esa mezcla sobre el libro de la Ley, y con ella roció también a todo el pueblo. ²⁰Cuando terminó, dijo: «Esta sangre confirma el pacto que Dios ha hecho con ustedes.» ²¹Moisés también roció con sangre el santuario y todas las cosas que se usaban en el culto. ²²La ley dice que la sangre quita el pecado de casi todas las cosas, y que debemos ofrecer sangre a Dios para que nos perdone nuestros pecados. ²³Por eso fue necesario matar a esos animales, para limpiar todo lo que hay en el santuario, que es una copia de lo que hay en el cielo. Pero lo que hay en el cielo necesita algo mejor que sacrificios de animales.

El mejor sacrificio

²⁴Porque Cristo no entró en el santuario hecho por seres humanos, que era sólo una copia del santuario verdadero. Cristo entró en el cielo mismo, y allí se presenta ante Dios para pedirle que nos perdone. ²⁵No entró para ofrecerse como sacrificio muchas veces, como aquí en la tierra lo hace el jefe de los sacerdotes, que entra una vez al año para ofrecer una sangre que no es la suya. ²⁶Si Cristo tuviera que hacer lo mismo, habría tenido que morir muchas veces desde que Dios creó el mundo. Pero lo cierto es que ahora, cuando ya se acerca el fin, Cristo se ha manifestado de una vez y para siempre. Se ha manifestado para ofrecerse como el sacrificio por el cual Dios nos perdona nuestros pecados. ²⁷Todos nosotros moriremos una sola vez, y después vendrá el juicio. ²⁸De la misma manera, Cristo se ha ofrecido una sola vez para que muchos seamos perdonados de nuestros pecados. Después él volverá otra vez al mundo, pero no para morir por nuestros pecados, sino para salvar a todos los que esperamos su venida.

La ley antigua ya no sirve

10La ley de Moisés era sólo una muestra de lo bueno que Dios nos iba a dar, y no lo que en verdad nos daría. Por eso, la ley nunca puede hacer perfectos a los que, cada año, van al santuario a ofrecer a Dios los mismos sacrificios de siempre. ²Si en verdad la ley pudiera quitarles el pecado, no se sentirían culpables y dejarían de ofrecer sacrificios a Dios. ³Pero sucede lo contrario. Cada año, cuando ofrecen esos sacrificios, lo único que logran es recordar sus pecados. ⁴Porque la sangre de los toros y de los chivos que se sacrifican no puede quitar los pecados.

^5-6Por eso, cuando Cristo vino a este mundo, le dijo a Dios:

«Tú no pides sacrificios
a cambio de tu perdón;
por eso me has dado un cuerpo.

⁷»Por eso te dije:
“Aquí me tienes,
para cumplir tu voluntad.
Así me lo enseña
la Ley de Moisés.”»

⁸En primer lugar, este salmo dice que Dios no quiere, ni le gustan, los sacrificios y las ofrendas, ni los animales quemados sobre el altar, aunque la ley manda que sean presentados. ⁹Después de eso, el salmo dice que Cristo vino a cumplir la voluntad de Dios. Es decir, Cristo quitó aquellos sacrificios antiguos, y estableció uno nuevo. ¹⁰Dios nos eligió porque Jesucristo obedeció sus órdenes al morir en la cruz, y ofreció su cuerpo como sacrificio una sola vez y para siempre.

¹¹Aunque los sacrificios de animales no quitan el pecado, los sacerdotes judíos siguen ofreciéndolos muchas veces todos los días. ¹²Pero Jesucristo le ofreció a Dios un solo sacrificio para siempre, y así nos perdonó nuestros pecados. Luego se sentó a la derecha del trono de Dios, ¹³y allí estará esperando, hasta que Dios derrote a sus enemigos. ¹⁴Porque, con un solo sacrificio, Jesucristo hizo que Dios hiciera perfectos a todos los que eligió para ser parte de su pueblo. ¹⁵Así lo asegura el Espíritu Santo cuando dice:

¹⁶«Por eso, éste será mi nuevo pacto
con el pueblo de Israel:
haré que mis enseñanzas
las aprendan de memoria,
y que sean la guía de su vida.
¹⁷Y nunca más me acordaré
de sus pecados y maldades.»

¹⁸Por lo tanto, si nuestros pecados han sido perdonados, ya no es necesario darle a Dios más ofrendas para que nos perdone.

Amistad con Dios

¹⁹Hermanos, la sangre que Jesús derramó al morir nos permite ahora tener amistad con Dios, y entrar con toda libertad en el lugar más santo. ²⁰Pues cuando Jesús murió, abrió la cortina que nos impedía el paso. Pero ahora Jesús está vivo, y por medio de él podemos acercarnos a Dios de un modo nuevo y distinto. ²¹Él es nuestro gran sacerdote, encargado del santuario que está en el cielo. ²²Por eso, mantengamos una amistad sincera con Dios, teniendo la plena seguridad de que podemos confiar en él. Porque Cristo nos dejó limpios de pecado, como si nos hubiera lavado con agua pura, y ya estamos libres de culpa. ²³Sigamos confiando en que Dios nos salvará. No lo dudemos ni un instante, porque él cumplirá lo que prometió. ²⁴Tratemos de ayudarnos unos a otros, y de amarnos y hacer lo bueno. ²⁵No dejemos de reunirnos, como hacen algunos. Al contrario, animémonos cada vez más a seguir confiando en Dios, y más aún cuando ya vemos que se acerca el día en que el Señor juzgará a todo el mundo.

²⁶Si seguimos pecando después de haber conocido la verdadera enseñanza de Dios, ningún sacrificio podrá hacer que Dios nos perdone. ²⁷No nos quedaría más remedio que esperar, con un miedo terrible, el juicio final, que es cuando los enemigos de Dios serán destruidos con fuego ardiente.

²⁸Si en un juicio dos testigos afirman que alguien ha desobedecido la ley de Moisés, los jueces no le tienen compasión a esa persona y ordenan su muerte. ²⁹¡Imagínense entonces el terrible castigo que recibirán los que desprecian al Hijo de Dios, y los que dicen que su muerte no sirve para nada! Los que hacen eso insultan al Espíritu de Dios, que los ama, y menosprecian la muerte de Cristo, es decir, el nuevo pacto por medio del cual Dios les perdona sus pecados. ³⁰Además, como todos sabemos, Dios dijo que él se vengará de sus enemigos, y que los castigará por todo lo malo que han hecho. También dijo que juzgará a su pueblo. ³¹¡Que terrible debe ser que el Dios de la vida tenga que castigarnos!

³²Recuerden todas las dificultades y los sufrimientos por los que ustedes pasaron al principio, cuando aceptaron la buena noticia. A pesar de eso, nunca dejaron de confiar. ³³A muchos de ustedes sus enemigos los insultaron y los maltrataron delante de la gente, y en otras ocasiones ustedes sufrieron con quienes eran tratados así. ³⁴También tuvieron ustedes compasión de los que estaban en la cárcel, y con alegría dejaron que las autoridades les quitaran sus pertenencias, porque sabían que en el cielo tienen algo mucho mejor y más duradero.

³⁵Por eso, no dejen de confiar en Dios, porque sólo así recibirán un gran premio. ³⁶Sean fuertes, y por ningún motivo dejen de confiar en él cuando estén sufriendo, para que así puedan hacer lo que Dios quiere y reciban lo que él les ha prometido. ³⁷Pues Dios dice en la Biblia:

«Muy pronto llegará
el que tiene que venir.
¡Ya no tarda!

³⁸»Los que me son fieles en todo
y confían en mí
vivirán para siempre.

Pero si dejan de serme fieles,
no estaré contento con ellos.»

³⁹Gracias a Dios, nosotros no somos de los que dejan de ser fieles y acaban siendo castigados, sino que somos de los que reciben la salvación por confiar en Dios.

La confianza en Dios

11Confiar en Dios es estar totalmente seguro de que uno va a recibir lo que espera. Es estar convencido de que algo existe, aun cuando no se pueda ver. ²Dios aceptó a nuestros antepasados porque ellos confiaron en él. ³Y nosotros creemos que Dios creó el universo con una sola orden suya. Lo que ahora vemos fue hecho de cosas que no podían verse.

⁴Abel confió en Dios, y por eso le ofreció un sacrificio mejor que el de Caín. Por eso Dios consideró que Abel era justo, y aceptó sus ofrendas. Y aunque Abel ya está muerto, todavía podemos aprender mucho de la confianza que él tuvo en Dios.

⁵Henoc confió en Dios y, por eso, en vez de morir, Dios se lo llevó de este mundo y nadie volvió a encontrarlo. La Biblia dice que, antes de que Henoc fuera llevado, fue obediente, y eso le agradó a Dios. ⁶Porque a Dios no le gusta que no confiemos en él. Para ser amigos de Dios, hay que creer que él existe y que sabe premiar a los que buscan su amistad.

⁷Noé confió en Dios y, por eso, cuando Dios le avisó que sucederían cosas que todavía no podían verse, obedeció y construyó una casa flotante para salvar a su familia. Por su confianza en Dios, Noé recibió las bendiciones que Dios da a todos los que lo obedecen. También por su confianza en Dios, Noé hizo que la gente de este mundo fuera condenada.

⁸Abraham confió en Dios, y por eso obedeció cuando Dios le ordenó que saliera de su tierra para ir al país que le daría, aun cuando no sabía hacia dónde iba. ⁹Abraham confió tanto en Dios que vivió como un extranjero en el país que Dios le había prometido. Vivió en tiendas de campaña, igual que Isaac y Jacob, a quienes Dios también les había prometido ese país. ¹⁰Abraham confiaba en que algún día vería la ciudad que Dios había planeado y construido sobre bases firmes.

¹¹Abraham confió en Dios y, por eso, aunque su esposa Sara no podía tener hijos y él era ya muy viejo, Dios le dio fuerzas para tener un hijo. Y es que Abraham confió en que Dios cumpliría su promesa. ¹²Por eso Abraham, aun cuando ya iba a morir, pudo tener tantos descendientes como las estrellas del cielo y como la arena que hay a la orilla del mar. ¡Nadie puede contarlos!

¹³Todas las personas que hemos mencionado murieron sin recibir las cosas que Dios les había prometido. Pero como ellos confiaban en Dios, las vieron desde lejos y se alegraron, pues sabían que en este mundo ellos estaban de paso, como los extranjeros. ¹⁴Queda claro, entonces, que quienes reconocen esto todavía buscan un país propio, ¹⁵y que no están pensando en volver al país de donde salieron, pues de otra manera hubieran regresado allá. ¹⁶Lo que desean es tener un país mejor en el cielo. Por eso Dios les ha preparado una ciudad, y no tiene vergüenza de que le llamen su Dios.

¹⁷Abraham confió en Dios cuando Dios quiso probar si él lo obedecería o no. Por eso Abraham tomó a su hijo Isaac para ofrecerlo como sacrificio. No le importó que fuera su único hijo, ¹⁸ni que Dios le hubiera prometido que por medio de Isaac tendría muchos descendientes. ¹⁹Abraham sabía que Dios tiene poder para hacer que los muertos vuelvan a vivir. Esa confianza hizo que Abraham no tuviera que matar a su hijo; y fue como si Isaac hubiera vuelto a vivir.

²⁰Isaac confió en Dios, y por eso les prometió a sus hijos Jacob y Esaú que Dios los iba a bendecir.

²¹Jacob confió en Dios y, por eso, cuando ya estaba por morir, les prometió a los hijos de José que Dios los iba a bendecir. Luego, se apoyó en la punta de su bastón y adoró a Dios.

²²José confió en Dios y, por eso, poco antes de morir, anunció que los israelitas saldrían libres de Egipto, y dejó instrucciones para que supieran qué hacer con sus huesos.

²³Los padres de Moisés confiaron en Dios y, por eso, cuando Moisés nació, lo escondieron durante tres meses. El rey de Egipto había ordenado que se matara a todos los niños israelitas, pero ellos vieron que Moisés era un niño hermoso y no tuvieron miedo, porque confiaban en Dios.

²⁴Moisés confió en Dios y, por eso, cuando ya fue hombre, no quiso seguir siendo hijo adoptivo de la hija del rey. ²⁵No quiso disfrutar de lo que podía hacer y tener como egipcio, pues era pecado. Prefirió que los egipcios lo maltrataran, como lo hacían con el pueblo de Dios. ²⁶En vez de disfrutar de las riquezas de Egipto, Moisés decidió que era mejor sufrir, como también iba a sufrir el Mesías, pues sabía que Dios le daría su premio.

²⁷Moisés confió en Dios y, por eso no le tuvo miedo al rey ni se rindió nunca. Salio de Egipto, y actuó como si estuviera viendo a Dios, que es invisible. ²⁸Moisés confió en Dios, y por eso celebró la Pascua. También mandó rociar con sangre las puertas de las casas israelitas. Así, el ángel enviado a matar no le hizo daño a ningún hijo mayor de las familias israelitas.

²⁹Los israelitas confiaron en Dios, y por eso cruzaron el Mar de los Juncos como si caminaran sobre tierra seca. Pero cuando los egipcios quisieron pasar, todos ellos se ahogaron.

³⁰Los israelitas confiaron en Dios y, por eso, cuando marcharon alrededor de la ciudad de Jericó durante siete días, los muros de la ciudad se vinieron abajo.

³¹Rahab, la prostituta, confió en Dios y trató bien a los espías de Israel. Por eso no murió junto con los que habían desobedecido a Dios en Jericó.

³²¿Qué más les puedo decir? No me alcanzaría el tiempo para hablarles de la confianza en Dios de Gedeón, de Barac, de Sansón, de Jefté, de David, de Samuel y de los profetas. ³³Ellos confiaron en Dios, y por eso conquistaron países; y como actuaron con justicia, recibieron lo que Dios les había prometido. Cerraron la boca de leones y ³⁴apagaron grandes incendios. Escaparon de que los mataran con espada, recibieron fuerzas cuando más débiles estaban, y en la guerra fueron tan poderosos que vencieron a los ejércitos enemigos.

³⁵Algunas mujeres confiaron en Dios, y por eso Dios hizo que sus familiares muertos volvieran a vivir.

Algunos confiaron tanto en Dios que no quisieron que los dejaran en libertad. Al contrario, dejaron que los mataran, porque sabían que volverían a vivir y así estarían mucho mejor. ³⁶Mucha gente se burló de ellos y los maltrató, y hasta los metió en la cárcel. ³⁷A otros los mataron a pedradas, los partieron en dos con una sierra, o los mataron con espada. Algunos anduvieron de un lugar a otro con ropas hechas de piel de oveja o de cabra. Eran pobres, estaban tristes, y habían sido maltratados. ³⁸La gente de este mundo no merecía personas tan buenas, que anduvieron sin rumbo fijo por el desierto, por las montañas, por las cuevas y las cavernas de la tierra.

³⁹Dios estaba contento con todas estas personas, pues confiaron en él. Pero ninguna de ellas recibió lo que Dios había prometido. ⁴⁰Y es que Dios tenía un plan mucho mejor, para que nosotros también recibiéramos lo prometido. Dios sólo hará perfectas a esas personas cuando nos haya hecho perfectos a nosotros.

Los sufrimientos y nuestra confianza en Dios

12¡Todas esas personas están a nuestro alrededor como testigos! Por eso debemos dejar de lado el pecado que es un estorbo, pues la vida es una carrera que exige resistencia.

²Pongamos toda nuestra atención en Jesús, pues de él viene nuestra confianza, y es él quien hace que confiemos cada vez más y mejor. Jesús soportó la vergüenza de morir clavado en una cruz porque sabía que, después de tanto sufrimiento, sería muy feliz. Y ahora se ha sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios.

³Piensen en el ejemplo de Jesús. Mucha gente pecadora lo odió y lo hizo sufrir, pero él siguió adelante. Por eso, ustedes no deben rendirse ni desanimarse, ⁴pues en su lucha contra el pecado todavía no han tenido que morir como él.

⁵Pero ustedes parecen haberse olvidado ya del consejo que Dios les da a sus hijos en la Biblia:

«Querido jovencito,
no tomes las intrucciones de Dios
como algo sin importancia.
Ni te pongas triste
cuando él te reprenda.

⁶»Porque Dios corrige y castiga
a todo aquel que ama
y que considera su hijo.»

⁷Si ahora ustedes están sufriendo, es porque Dios los ama y los corrige, como si fueran sus hijos. Porque no hay un padre que no corrija a su hijo. ⁸Si Dios no los corrige, como lo hace con todos sus hijos, entonces ustedes no son en verdad sus hijos. ⁹Cuando éramos niños, nuestros padres aquí en la tierra nos corregían, y nosotros los respetábamos. Con mayor razón debemos obedecer a Dios, que es nuestro Padre que está en el cielo, pues así tendremos vida eterna.

¹⁰Cuando éramos niños, nuestros padres nos corregían porque pensaban que eso era lo mejor para nosotros. Pero Dios nos corrige para nuestro verdadero bien, para hacernos santos como él. ¹¹Desde luego que ningún castigo nos gusta en el momento de recibirlo, pues nos duele. Pero si aprendemos la lección que Dios nos quiere dar, viviremos en paz y haremos el bien.

¹²Por todo eso, no debemos dejar de confiar totalmente en Dios. Si la vida es como una carrera, y ustedes tienen ya cansadas las manos y débiles las rodillas, cobren nuevas fuerzas. ¹³Corran por un camino recto y parejo, para que el pie que esté cojo se sane y no se tuerza más.

Advertencia

¹⁴Traten de vivir en paz con todos, y de obedecer a Dios; porque si no lo hacen, jamás lo verán cara a cara. ¹⁵No dejen que nadie se aleje del amor de Dios. Tampoco permitan que nadie cause problemas en el grupo, porque eso les haría daño; ¡sería como una planta amarga, que los envenenaría! ¹⁶Ninguno debe tener relaciones sexuales prohibidas ni despreciar a Dios. Eso fue lo que hizo Esaú, pues cambió sus derechos de hijo mayor^[l] por un plato de comida, ¹⁷y cuando quiso que su padre le reconociera esos derechos, él no se los reconoció. Esaú lloró mucho, pero ya no había nada que hacer.

¹⁸Ustedes no se acercaron al monte Sinaí, el cual se podía ver y tocar, y en el que había fuego, oscuridad, tinieblas y tormenta. ¹⁹Tampoco oyeron el sonido de una trompeta, ni la voz de Dios dándoles mandamientos. Los que oyeron esa voz en el monte Sinaí pedían que se callara, ²⁰pues no podían obedecer el mandamiento que les ordenaba: «Deberán matar a pedradas, o con una lanza, a cualquier persona o animal que ponga un pie en este monte.» ²¹Tan terrible fue lo que ellos vieron en ese monte, que Moisés mismo dijo: «Estoy temblando de miedo.»

²²Ustedes, por el contrario, se han acercado al monte Sión y a la ciudad de Dios, quien vive para siempre. Ésa es la ciudad de Jerusalén, que está en el cielo. Allí hay miles de ángeles que alaban a Dios, ²³y allí están todos aquellos a quienes Dios trató como a hijos, y a quienes les dio el derecho de vivir en el cielo. Ustedes se han acercado a Dios, quien juzgará a todo el mundo. También se han acercado a los espíritus de las personas buenas que Dios hizo perfectas. ²⁴Se han acercado a Jesús, y recuerden que, por medio de él, Dios hizo un nuevo pacto con ustedes. Gracias a la sangre que Jesús derramó al morir, hemos sido perdonados de nuestros pecados. Por eso Jesús es mejor que Abel, pues la sangre de Abel no ofrece perdón, sino que pide venganza.

^25-26Tengan cuidado cuando Dios les llame la atención. No lo rechacen, porque los israelitas que en el pasado lo rechazaron, no escaparon del castigo. En aquella ocasión, cuando Dios les habló, su voz hizo temblar la tierra. Y si nosotros rechazamos a Dios, que nos llama la atención desde el cielo, tampoco escaparemos del castigo. Porque ahora él dice: «Otra vez haré temblar, no sólo la tierra, sino también el cielo.» ²⁷Y cuando dice «otra vez», entendemos que él quitará las cosas creadas, las que se pueden mover, para dejar las cosas que no pueden ser movidas. ²⁸Gracias a Dios, el reino que él nos da no puede ser movido. Por eso debemos adorar a Dios con el amor y la honra que a él le gusta recibir. ²⁹Porque nuestro Dios es como un fuego destructor.

¿Cómo debe vivir el cristiano?

13Ámense siempre los unos a los otros, como hermanos en Cristo. ²No se olviden de recibir bien a la gente que llegue a sus casas, pues de ese modo mucha gente, sin darse cuenta, ha recibido ángeles.

³Preocúpense por los hermanos que están en la cárcel y por los que han sido maltratados. Piensen cómo se sentirían ustedes si estuvieran en la misma situación.

⁴Todos deben considerar el matrimonio como algo muy valioso. El esposo y la esposa deben ser fieles el uno al otro, porque Dios castigará a los que tengan relaciones sexuales prohibidas y sean infieles en el matrimonio.

⁵No vivan preocupados por tener más dinero. Estén contentos con lo que tienen, porque Dios ha dicho en la Biblia:

«Nunca te dejaré desamparado.»

⁶Por eso, podemos repetir con toda confianza lo que dice la Biblia:

«No tengo miedo.
Nadie puede hacerme daño
porque Dios me ayuda.»

⁷Piensen en los líderes que les anunciaron el mensaje de Dios, pues ellos confiaron siempre en Dios. Piensen mucho en ellos y sigan su ejemplo.

⁸Jesucristo nunca cambia: es el mismo ayer, hoy y siempre. ⁹Por eso, no hagan caso de enseñanzas extrañas, que no tienen nada que ver con lo que Jesucristo nos enseñó. Esas reglas acerca de lo que se debe comer, y de lo que no se debe comer, nunca han ayudado a nadie. Es mejor que nos dé fuerzas el amor de Dios.

¹⁰Los sacerdotes del antiguo lugar de culto no tienen derecho a comer de lo que hay en nuestro altar. ¹¹El Jefe de los sacerdotes lleva al antiguo lugar de culto la sangre de los animales sacrificados, para ofrecérsela a Dios y pedir el perdón por los pecados. Sin embargo, los cuerpos de esos animales se queman fuera del lugar donde vive el pueblo. ¹²Del mismo modo, Jesús murió fuera de la ciudad de Jerusalén para que, por medio de su sangre, Dios perdonara a su pueblo. ¹³Por eso, también nosotros debemos salir junto con Jesús, y compartir con él la vergüenza que le hicieron pasar al clavarlo en una cruz. ¹⁴Porque en este mundo no tenemos una ciudad que dure para siempre, sino que vamos al encuentro de la ciudad que está por venir. ¹⁵Nuestra ofrenda a Dios es darle gracias siempre, por medio de Jesucristo, pues hemos dicho que él es nuestro Señor.

¹⁶Nunca se olviden de hacer lo bueno, ni de compartir lo que tienen con los que no tienen nada. Ésos son los sacrificios que agradan a Dios.

¹⁷Obedezcan a sus líderes, porque ellos cuidan de ustedes sin descanso, y saben que son responsables ante Dios de lo que a ustedes les pase. Traten de no causar problemas, para que el trabajo que ellos hacen sea agradable y ustedes puedan servirles de ayuda.

¹⁸Oren por nosotros. Estamos seguros de que Dios no tiene nada contra nosotros, pues tratamos de portarnos bien en todo. ¹⁹Oren especialmente para que yo pueda ir pronto a visitarlos.

Despedida

^20-21El Dios de paz resucitó a nuestro Señor Jesús, y por medio de la sangre que Jesús derramó al morir, hizo un pacto eterno con nosotros. Somos el rebaño de Jesús, y él es nuestro gran Pastor. Por eso le pido al Dios de paz que haga que ustedes sean buenos y perfectos en todo, y que Jesucristo los ayude a obedecerlo. ¡Que Jesús reciba la gloria y la honra por siempre! Amén.

²²Hermanos, les he escrito estas breves palabras para animarlos. Léanlas con paciencia. ²³Quiero decirles que nuestro hermano Timoteo ya está en libertad y, si llega pronto, me acompañará a visitarlos.

²⁴Saluden por favor a todos sus líderes y a todos los hermanos que forman el pueblo santo de Dios. Los hermanos que están en Italia les mandan saludos.

²⁵¡Deseo de todo corazón que Dios los llene de su amor!

Confianza en Dios

²Hermanos en Cristo, ustedes deben sentirse muy felices cuando pasen por toda clase de dificultades. ³Así, cuando su confianza en Dios sea puesta a prueba, ustedes aprenderán a soportar con más fuerza las dificultades. ⁴Por lo tanto, deben resistir la prueba hasta el final, para que sean mejores y puedan obedecer lo que se les ordene.

⁵Si alguno de ustedes no tiene sabiduría, pídasela a Dios. Él se la da a todos en abundancia, sin echarles nada en cara. ⁶Eso sí, debe pedirla con la seguridad de que Dios se la dará. Porque los que dudan son como las olas del mar, que el viento lleva de un lado a otro. ^7-8La gente que no es confiable ni capaz de tomar buenas decisiones no recibirá nada del Señor.

Los pobres y los ricos

⁹Si alguno de ustedes es pobre, debe sentirse orgulloso de lo mucho que vale ante Dios. ¹⁰Si alguno es rico, debe sentirse feliz cuando Dios lo humille, pues las riquezas duran muy poco; son como las flores del campo. ¹¹Cuando hace mucho calor, las plantas se secan; entonces sus flores se marchitan y pierden su belleza. Lo mismo pasa con el rico: ni él ni sus riquezas durarán.

Las tentaciones

¹²Al que soporta las dificultades, Dios lo bendice y, cuando las supera, le da el premio y el honor más grande que puede recibir: la vida eterna, que ha prometido a quienes lo aman.

¹³Cuando ustedes sean tentados a hacer lo malo, no le echen la culpa a Dios, porque él no puede ser tentado, ni tienta a nadie a hacer lo malo. ¹⁴Al contrario, cuando somos tentados, son nuestros propios deseos los que nos arrastran y dominan. ¹⁵Los malos deseos nos llevan a pecar; y cuando vivimos sólo para hacer lo malo, lo único que nos espera es la muerte eterna.

¹⁶Mis queridos hermanos, no sean tontos ni se engañen a ustedes mismos. ¹⁷Dios nunca cambia. Fue Dios quien creó todas las estrellas del cielo, y es quien nos da todo lo bueno y todo lo perfecto. ¹⁸Además, quiso que fuéramos sus hijos. Por eso, por medio de la buena noticia de salvación nos dio una vida nueva.

Obediencia al mensaje de Dios

¹⁹Mis queridos hermanos, pongan atención a esto que les voy a decir: todos deben estar siempre dispuestos a escuchar a los demás, pero no dispuestos a enojarse y hablar mucho. ²⁰Porque la gente violenta no puede hacer lo que Dios quiere. ²¹Por eso, dejen de hacer lo malo, pues ya hay mucha maldad en el mundo. Hacer lo malo es como andar vestido con ropa sucia. Más bien, reciban con humildad el mensaje que Dios les ha dado. Ese mensaje tiene poder para salvarlos.

^22-24¡Obedezcan el mensaje de Dios! Si lo escuchan, pero no lo obedecen, se engañan a ustedes mismos y les pasará lo mismo que a quien se mira en un espejo: tan pronto como se va, se olvida de cómo era. ²⁵Por el contrario, si ustedes ponen toda su atención en la palabra de Dios, y la obedecen siempre, serán felices en todo lo que hagan. Porque la palabra de Dios es perfecta y los libera del pecado.

²⁶Si alguien se cree muy santo y no cuida sus palabras, se engaña a sí mismo y de nada le sirve tanta religiosidad. ²⁷Creer en Dios el Padre es agradarlo y hacer el bien, ayudar a las viudas y a los huérfanos cuando sufren, y no dejarse vencer por la maldad del mundo.

¡No tengan favoritos!

2Hermanos míos, ustedes han confiado en nuestro poderoso Señor Jesucristo, así que no deben tratar a unas personas mejor que a otras. ²Imagínense que un rico, vestido con ropa muy fina y con un anillo de oro, entra en donde ustedes se reúnen, y que al mismo tiempo entra un pobre, vestido con ropa muy gastada. ³Si ustedes atienden mejor al rico y le dicen: «Ven, siéntate en el mejor lugar», pero al pobre le dicen: «Quédate allí de pie», o «Siéntate en el suelo», ⁴serán como los malos jueces, que favorecen a unos más que a otros.

⁵Escúchenme bien, hermanos queridos: Dios eligió a la gente pobre de este mundo para que la confianza en Dios sea su verdadera riqueza, y para que reciban el reino que él ha prometido a los que lo aman. ⁶¿Cómo se atreven ustedes a maltratar y despreciar a los pobres? ¿Acaso no son los ricos quienes los maltratan a ustedes y los meten en la cárcel? ⁷¿Acaso no son los ricos los que insultan a nuestro Señor?

⁸Si ustedes obedecen el mandamiento más importante que Dios nos ha dado, harán muy bien. Ese mandamiento dice: «Recuerden que cada uno debe amar a su prójimo como se ama a sí mismo.» ⁹Pero si ustedes les dan más importancia a unas personas, y las tratan mejor que a otras, están pecando y desobedeciendo la ley de Dios.

¹⁰Si ustedes obedecen todas las leyes, menos una de ellas, es lo mismo que si desobedecieran todas. ¹¹Porque el mismo Dios que dijo: «No sean infieles en su matrimonio», también dijo: «No maten». Por eso, si tú eres fiel en el matrimonio, pero matas, eres culpable de haber desobedecido la ley de Dios.

¹²En el día del juicio, Dios nos juzgará de acuerdo con la ley que nos libera del pecado. Por eso, debemos tener mucho cuidado en todo lo que hacemos y decimos. ¹³Porque Dios no tendrá compasión de quienes no se compadecieron de otros. Pero los que tuvieron compasión de otros, saldrán bien del juicio.

Confianza y buenas acciones

¹⁴Hermanos en Cristo, ¿de qué sirve que algunos de ustedes digan que son fieles a Dios,^[m] si no hacen nada bueno para demostrarlo? ¡Así no se van a salvar!

¹⁵Si algún hermano o hermana de la iglesia no tiene ropa ni comida, ¹⁶y tú no le das lo que necesita para abrigarse y comer bien, de nada le sirve que tú le digas «Que te vaya bien, abrígate y come hasta que te llenes». ¹⁷Lo mismo pasa con la fidelidad a Dios: de nada nos sirve decir que le somos fieles, si no hacemos nada que lo demuestre. Esa clase de fidelidad está muerta.

¹⁸A los que dicen que son fieles a Dios, pero no hacen lo bueno, yo les podría decir: «Tú dices que eres fiel a Dios, y yo hago lo que es bueno. Demuéstrame que es posible ser fiel a Dios sin tener que hacer lo bueno, y yo te demostraré que soy fiel a Dios por medio del bien que hago. ¹⁹Tú crees que existe un solo Dios. ¡Muy bien! Pero hasta los demonios creen en él y tiemblan de miedo. ²⁰No seas tonto. Debes aceptar que de nada te sirve decir que eres fiel a Dios y confiar en él, si no haces lo bueno. ²¹Nuestro antepasado Abraham agradó a Dios cuando puso a su hijo Isaac sobre el altar, para sacrificarlo. Y Dios lo aceptó por eso. ²²La confianza que Abraham tuvo en Dios se demostró con todo lo que hizo, y por medio de todo lo que hizo su confianza llegó a ser perfecta.»

²³Así se cumplió lo que dice en la Biblia: «Abraham confió en la promesa de Dios, y por eso Dios lo aceptó». Fue así como Abraham se hizo amigo de Dios.

²⁴Como pueden ver, Dios nos acepta por lo que hacemos, y no sólo por lo que creemos.

²⁵Así le sucedió a Rahab, la prostituta. Dios la aceptó por haber recibido y escondido a los espías en su casa, y por ayudarlos también a escapar por otro camino.

²⁶Así como un cuerpo sin alma está muerto, también la confianza en Dios está muerta si no va acompañada de buenas acciones.

La lengua

3Hermanos en Cristo, no debemos tratar de ser todos maestros, pues bien sabemos que Dios juzgará a los maestros más estrictamente que a los demás. ²Todos cometemos muchas faltas. ¿Quién, entonces, es una persona madura? Sólo quien es capaz de dominar su lengua y de dominarse a sí mismo.

³Al caballo podemos dominarlo, y hacer que nos obedezca, si le ponemos un freno en la boca. ⁴Algo parecido pasa con los barcos. Por grande que sea un barco, y por fuertes que sean los vientos que lo empujan, el navegante puede controlarlo con un timón muy pequeño. ⁵Y lo mismo pasa con nuestra lengua. Es una de las partes más pequeñas de nuestro cuerpo, pero es capaz de hacer grandes cosas. ¡Es una llama pequeña que puede incendiar todo un bosque!

⁶Las palabras que decimos con nuestra lengua son como el fuego. Nuestra lengua tiene mucho poder para hacer el mal. Puede echar a perder toda nuestra vida, y hacer que nos quememos en el infierno.

⁷Podemos dominar toda clase de animales salvajes, de aves, serpientes y animales del mar, ⁸pero no hemos podido controlar nuestra lengua ni evitar decir palabras que dañen. La lengua parece un animal salvaje, que nadie puede dominar y que está lleno de veneno mortal.

^9-10Con nuestra lengua podemos bendecir o maldecir. Con ella alabamos a nuestro Dios y Padre, y también insultamos a nuestros semejantes, que Dios hizo parecidos a él mismo. Hermanos, ¡esto no debe ser así!

¹¹De un mismo pozo no puede salir agua dulce y agua amarga o salada. ¹²Tampoco da higos un árbol de aceitunas, ni da uvas un árbol de higos.

La sabiduría que Dios da

¹³Si alguno de ustedes es sabio y entendido, demuéstrelo haciendo el bien y portándose con humildad. ¹⁴Pero si ustedes lo hacen todo por envidia o por celos, vivirán tristes y amargados; no tendrán nada de qué sentirse orgullosos, y faltarán a la verdad. ¹⁵Porque esa sabiduría no viene de Dios, sino que es de este mundo y del demonio, ¹⁶y produce celos, peleas, problemas y todo tipo de maldad.

¹⁷En cambio, los que tienen la sabiduría que viene de Dios, no hacen lo malo; al contrario, buscan la paz, son obedientes y amables con los demás, se compadecen de los que sufren, y siempre hacen lo bueno; tratan a todos de la misma manera, y son verdaderos cristianos.

¹⁸A los que buscan la paz entre las personas, Dios los premiará dándoles paz y justicia.

Las guerras y los pleitos

4¿Saben por qué hay guerras y pleitos entre ustedes? ¡Pues porque no saben dominar su egoísmo y su maldad! ²Son tan envidiosos que quisieran tenerlo todo, y cuando no lo pueden conseguir, son capaces hasta de pelear, matar y promover la guerra. ¡Pero ni así pueden conseguir lo que quieren!

Ustedes no tienen, porque no se lo piden a Dios. ³Y cuando piden, lo hacen mal, porque lo único que quieren es satisfacer sus malos deseos. ⁴Ustedes no aman a Dios, ni lo obedecen. ¿Pero acaso no saben que hacerse amigo del mundo es volverse enemigo de Dios? ¡Pues así es! Si ustedes aman lo malo del mundo, se vuelven enemigos de Dios. ⁵¿Acaso no creen que, como dice la Biblia, «Dios nos ama mucho»?^{[n] 6}En realidad, Dios nos trata con mucho más amor, como dice la Biblia:

«Dios se opone a los orgullosos,
pero brinda su ayuda a los humildes.»

⁷Por eso, obedezcan a Dios. Háganle frente al diablo, y él huirá de ustedes. ⁸Háganse amigos de Dios, y él se hará amigo de ustedes.

¡Pecadores, dejen de hacer el mal! Los que quieren amar a Dios, pero también quieren pecar, deben tomar una decisión: o Dios, o el mundo de pecado. ⁹Pónganse tristes y lloren de dolor. Dejen de reír y pónganse a llorar, para que Dios vea su arrepentimiento. ¹⁰Sean humildes delante del Señor, y él los premiará.

No critiquen a los demás

¹¹Hermanos, no hablen mal de los demás. El que habla mal del otro, o lo critica, es como si estuviera criticando a la ley de Dios, o hablando mal de ella. Lo que ustedes deben hacer es obedecer la ley de Dios, no criticarla. ¹²Dios es el único juez. Él nos dio la ley, y es el único que puede decir si somos inocentes o culpables. Por eso no tenemos derecho de criticar a los demás.

No sean orgullosos

¹³Escúchenme, ustedes, los que dicen: «Hoy o mañana iremos a la ciudad; allí nos quedaremos todo un año, y haremos buenos negocios y ganaremos mucho dinero.» ¹⁴¿Cómo pueden hablar así, cuando ni siquiera saben lo que les va a suceder mañana? Su vida es como la niebla: aparece por un poco de tiempo, y luego desaparece. ¹⁵Más bien, deberían decir: «Si Dios quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello.» ¹⁶Sin embargo, a ustedes les gusta hablar con orgullo, como si fueran dueños del futuro, y eso es muy malo. ¹⁷Si ustedes saben hacer lo bueno y no lo hacen, ya están pecando.

¡Advertencia a los ricos!

5Ahora escúchenme ustedes, los ricos: lloren y griten de dolor por todo lo que muy pronto van a sufrir. ²Sus riquezas se pudrirán, y la polilla les comerá la ropa. ³El dinero que han estado juntando en estos últimos tiempos se oxidará, y ese óxido será el testigo que los acusará en el juicio final, y que los destruirá como un fuego.

⁴Ustedes no les han pagado el sueldo a sus trabajadores, y el Señor todopoderoso ha oído las protestas de ellos. Ese dinero que no han pagado también los acusará delante de Dios.

⁵Ustedes los ricos han vivido con mucho lujo, y se han dado la gran vida en esta tierra. Han engordado tanto que parecen ganado listo para el matadero. ⁶Injustamente han acusado y matado a personas inocentes, que ni siquiera podían defenderse.

Paciencia y valor

^7-8Pero ustedes, hermanos, tengan paciencia y no se desesperen, pues ya pronto viene Cristo el Señor. Hagan como el campesino, que con paciencia espera la lluvia, y también espera que la tierra le dé buenas cosechas. ⁹No se quejen unos de otros, para que Dios no los castigue, pues él es nuestro juez, y ya pronto viene.

^10-11Sigan el ejemplo de los profetas, que hace mucho tiempo anunciaban el mensaje de Dios. Nosotros los admiramos porque fueron pacientes y soportaron el sufrimiento. Y seguramente se acuerdan de Job, y de cómo soportó con valor los sufrimientos y, al final, Dios lo trató muy bien. Y es que Dios es muy bueno y amoroso con los que sufren.

Otros consejos

¹²Sobre todo, queridos hermanos, no juren ni por el cielo ni por la tierra, ni por ninguna otra cosa. Cumplan más bien con su palabra. Cuando digan «sí», que sea «sí»; y cuando digan «no», que sea «no». ¡No vaya a castigarlos Dios por no cumplir con su palabra!

¹³Si alguno de ustedes está triste, póngase a orar. Si está alegre, alabe a Dios con cánticos. ¹⁴Si alguno está enfermo, que llame a los líderes de la iglesia, para que oren por él; entonces ellos le untarán aceite^[o] y le pedirán al Señor que lo sane. ¹⁵Si oran con confianza, Dios les responderá y sanará al enfermo, y si ha pecado también lo perdonará.

¹⁶Por eso, confiesen sus pecados unos a otros, y oren unos por otros, para que Dios los sane. La oración de una persona buena es muy poderosa, porque Dios la escucha. ¹⁷Por ejemplo, el profeta Elías era en todo igual a todos nosotros; pero le pidió a Dios con mucha confianza que no lloviera, ¡y durante tres años y medio no llovió sobre la tierra! ¹⁸Después volvió a orar, ¡y llovió y la tierra dio sus cosechas!

¹⁹Hermanos en Cristo, si alguno de ustedes deja de confiar en la verdad que ha aprendido, y otro le devuelve la confianza, ²⁰quiero que sepan esto: quien hace que un pecador deje de pecar, salva de la muerte al pecador y logra que Dios le perdone sus muchos pecados.^[p]

¹⁴But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

¹⁵For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

¹⁶Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

¹⁷If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

¹⁸If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

¹⁹I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

²⁰Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

²¹Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

²²But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

²³There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;

²⁴Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.

²⁵The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

²Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

³Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

⁴Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

⁵For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

⁶And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

⁷And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

⁸But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

⁹Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

¹⁰And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

¹¹They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

¹²And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

¹³But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

¹⁴Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

2Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

²For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

³How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

⁴God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

⁵For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

⁶But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?

⁷Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

⁸Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

⁹But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

¹⁰For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

¹¹For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

¹²Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

¹³And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

¹⁴Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

¹⁵And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

¹⁶For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

¹⁷Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

¹⁸For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

3Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

²Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

³For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

⁴For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

⁵And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

⁶But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

⁷Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

⁸Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

⁹When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.

¹⁰Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.

¹¹So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

¹²Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

¹³But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

¹⁴For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;

¹⁵While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.

¹⁶For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.

¹⁷But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?

¹⁸And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?

¹⁹So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

4Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

²For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

³For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

⁴For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

⁵And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

⁶Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

⁷Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

⁸For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

⁹There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

¹⁰For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

¹¹Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

¹²For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

¹³Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁴Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

¹⁵For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

¹⁶Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

5For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

²Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.

³And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.

⁴And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

⁵So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

⁶As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

⁷Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

⁸Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

⁹And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

¹⁰Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

¹¹Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

¹²For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

¹³For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

¹⁴But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

6Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

²Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

³And this will we do, if God permit.

⁴For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

⁵And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

⁶If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

⁷For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

⁸But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

⁹But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

¹⁰For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

¹¹And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

¹²That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

¹³For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

¹⁴Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

¹⁵And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

¹⁶For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

¹⁷Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

¹⁸That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

¹⁹Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

²⁰Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

7For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;

²To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

³Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

⁴Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.

⁵And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:

⁶But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.

⁷And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.

⁸And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.

⁹And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.

¹⁰For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.

¹¹If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?

¹²For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

¹³For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.

¹⁴For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.

¹⁵And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,

¹⁶Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.

¹⁷For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

¹⁸For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.

¹⁹For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

²⁰And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:

²¹(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

²²By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

²³And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

²⁴But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

²⁵Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

²⁶For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

²⁷Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

²⁸For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.

8Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

²A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

³For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

⁴For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

⁵Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

⁶But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

⁷For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

⁸For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

⁹Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

¹⁰For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

¹¹And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

¹²For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

¹³In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

9Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.

²For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary.

³And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all;

⁴Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

⁵And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly.

⁶Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.

⁷But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

⁸The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:

⁹Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;

¹⁰Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.

¹¹But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

¹²Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

¹³For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

¹⁴How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

¹⁵And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

¹⁶For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

¹⁷For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

¹⁸Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

¹⁹For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

²⁰Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

²¹Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

²²And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

²³It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

²⁴For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

²⁵Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

²⁶For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

²⁷And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

²⁸So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

10For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

²For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

³But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

⁴For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

⁵Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

⁶In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

⁷Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

⁸Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

⁹Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

¹⁰By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

¹¹And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

¹²But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

¹³From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

¹⁴For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

¹⁵Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

¹⁶This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

¹⁷And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

¹⁸Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

¹⁹Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

²⁰By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

²¹And having an high priest over the house of God;

²²Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

²³Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

²⁴And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

²⁵Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

²⁶For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

²⁷But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

²⁸He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

²⁹Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

³⁰For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

³¹It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

³²But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

³³Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

³⁴For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

³⁵Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

³⁶For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

³⁷For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.

³⁸Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

³⁹But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

11Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

²For by it the elders obtained a good report.

³Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

⁴By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

⁵By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

⁶But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

⁷By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

⁸By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

⁹By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

¹⁰For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

¹¹Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

¹²Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

¹³These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

¹⁴For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

¹⁵And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

¹⁶But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

¹⁸Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

¹⁹Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

²⁰By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

²¹By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.

²²By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

³⁴Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

³⁵Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

³⁶And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

³⁷They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

³⁸(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

³⁹And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:

⁴⁰God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

12Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

²Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

³For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

⁴Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

⁵And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

⁶For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

⁷If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?

⁸But if ye be without chastisem*nt, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

⁹Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

¹⁰For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

¹¹Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

¹²Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

¹³And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

¹⁴Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

¹⁵Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

¹⁶Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

¹⁷For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

¹⁸For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,

¹⁹And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:

²⁰(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:

²²But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

²³To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

²⁴And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

²⁵See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:

²⁶Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

²⁷And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

²⁸Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

²⁹For our God is a consuming fire.

13Let brotherly love continue.

²Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

³Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

⁴Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whor*mongers and adulterers God will judge.

⁵Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

⁶So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

⁷Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

2My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

²For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

³And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

⁴Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

⁵Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

⁶But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

⁷Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

⁸If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

⁹But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

¹⁰For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

¹¹For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

¹²So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

¹³For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

¹⁴What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

¹⁵If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

¹⁶And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁷Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

¹⁸Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

¹⁹Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

²⁰But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

²¹Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

²²Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

²³And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

²⁴Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

²⁵Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

²⁶For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

3My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

²For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

³Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

⁴Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

⁵Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

⁶And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

⁷For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

⁸But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

⁹Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

¹⁰Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

¹¹Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

¹²Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

¹³Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

¹⁴But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

¹⁵This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.

¹⁶For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹⁷But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁸And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

4From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

²Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

³Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

⁴Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

⁵Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

⁶But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

⁷Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

⁸Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

⁹Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

¹⁰Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

¹¹Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

¹²There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

¹³Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

¹⁴Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

¹⁵For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

¹⁶But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

5Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

²Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

³Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

⁴Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

⁵Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.

⁶Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.

⁷Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

⁸Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

⁹Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

¹⁰Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience.

¹¹Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

¹²But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

¹³Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

¹⁴Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

¹⁵And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

¹⁶Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

¹⁷Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.

¹⁸And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

¹⁹Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

²⁰Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

Pablo pide un favor para Onésimo

⁷Hermano Filemón, estoy muy contento y animado de saber que amas mucho a los demás, pues tú has consolado y animado a todos los que pertenecen al pueblo de Dios. ^8-9Yo ya soy viejo, y ahora estoy en la cárcel por servir a Jesucristo. Yo sé que tú me amas. Por eso, aunque te lo podría ordenar, pues Cristo me ha dado esa autoridad, prefiero pedirte que me hagas el siguiente favor: ¹⁰Te ruego que recibas bien a Onésimo. Para mí, él es como un hijo, pues yo le anuncié la buena noticia aquí en la cárcel.

¹¹Antes, Onésimo fue para ti un esclavo inútil, pero ahora nos es útil a ti y a mí. ¹²Por eso ahora te lo envío de vuelta, y espero que lo recibas como si me recibieras a mí. ¹³Me hubiera gustado que se quedara conmigo, para que me ayudara en lugar tuyo mientras yo siga preso por anunciar la buena noticia. ¹⁴Pero no haré nada sin que tú estés de acuerdo, para que el favor que te pido no te resulte una obligación.

¹⁵Tal vez Onésimo se alejó de ti por algún tiempo, para que ahora sea tuyo para siempre. ¹⁶Sólo que ahora ya no lo tendrás como a un esclavo, sino como a un hermano muy querido, lo cual es mucho mejor. Yo lo quiero mucho, pero tú debes quererlo aún más. Quiérelo como a un miembro de la familia del Señor, y no como a cualquier persona.

¹⁷Si realmente me consideras tu hermano, te pido que lo recibas como si me recibieras a mí. ¹⁸Si Onésimo te hizo algo malo, o si te debe algo, cóbramelo a mí. ¹⁹Con esta firma, que es de mi puño y letra, me comprometo a pagarte todo. Aunque, francamente, no deberías cobrarme nada, pues todo lo que tienes, y todo lo que eres, me lo debes a mí.

Introducción

1Hace mucho, mucho tiempo, los profetas comunicaron el mensaje de Dios a nuestros antepasados. Lo hicieron muchas veces y de muchas maneras. ²Pero ahora, en estos últimos tiempos, Dios nos lo ha comunicado por medio de su Hijo. Porque por medio de él Dios creó el universo, y lo hizo dueño de todas las cosas. ³El Hijo de Dios nos muestra el poder y la grandeza de su Padre. El Hijo de Dios es igual en todo a su Padre, y con su gran poder hace que el universo siga existiendo. El Hijo de Dios logró que Dios nos perdonara nuestros pecados, y después subió al cielo para sentarse a la derecha del trono de su Padre.

El Hijo de Dios es superior a los ángeles

⁴El Hijo de Dios llegó a ser superior a los ángeles, pues Dios le dio un nombre mucho más importante que el de ellos. ⁵Porque nunca Dios le dijo a ningún ángel:

«Tú eres mi Hijo;
desde hoy soy tu padre.»

Tampoco dijo de ningún ángel:

«Yo seré para él como un padre,
y él será para mí como un Hijo.»

⁶Y cuando Dios envió a su Hijo a este mundo, ordenó:

«Que todos mis ángeles lo adoren.»

⁷Además, cuando Dios habla acerca de los ángeles, dice:

«Mis ángeles son el viento,
y mis sirvientes son relámpagos.»

⁸Pero, cuando habla de su Hijo, Dios dice:

«Tu reinado durará para siempre,
y usarás tu poder en favor de la justicia.
⁹Te complaces en lo bueno,
y rechazas la injusticia.
Yo te declaro mi rey favorito,
¡el rey más feliz de la tierra!»

¹⁰Y también dice:

«Señor,
en el principio
tú afirmaste la tierra;
tú mismo hiciste los cielos,
¹¹pero se irán gastando,
como la ropa,
y un día los destruirás.

»Pero tú te mantendrás firme;
¹²siempre serás el mismo,
y tus años no tendrán fin.»

¹³Dios nunca le dijo a ningún ángel:

«Siéntate a la derecha de mi trono,
hasta que yo derrote a tus enemigos.»

¹⁴Porque los ángeles son solamente espíritus que sirven a Dios, y él los envía para ayudar a toda la gente que Dios habrá de salvar.

La salvación es importante

2Por eso debemos poner más interés en el mensaje de salvación que hemos oído, para no apartarnos del camino que Dios nos señala. ²Si el mensaje que anunciaron los ángeles resultó ser verdad, y quienes no lo obedecieron recibieron el castigo que merecían, ³con más razón seremos castigados nosotros si no reconocemos el gran valor de la salvación que él nos ofrece. Porque el Señor Jesús mismo fue el primero en comunicar el mensaje de salvación, y después, los que oyeron ese mensaje nos demostraron que era verdad. ⁴Dios también nos lo demostró por medio de muchas señales y de acciones maravillosas, y también con milagros. Además, cuando lo hizo, les dio el Espíritu Santo a quienes él se lo quiso dar.

Jesús nos salva

⁵Dios no ha puesto a los ángeles como jefes del mundo^[a] en que vamos a vivir en el futuro. En ese mundo ⁶el jefe será otro. Pues la Biblia dice:

«Dios, ¿qué somos los mortales
para que pienses en nosotros
y nos tomes en cuenta?

⁷»¡Nos creaste casi iguales
a los ángeles!
Nos trataste como a reyes;
⁸nos diste plena autoridad
sobre todo lo que hiciste;
nos diste dominio
sobre toda tu creación».^[b]

Y si Dios le dio «dominio sobre toda la creación», eso quiere decir que nada de lo creado queda fuera de su gobierno. Claro, todavía no vemos que él gobierne sobre todas las cosas. ⁹Pero Dios nos ama y envió a Jesús a morir para salvarnos. Por eso, aunque Dios permitió que, por algún tiempo, Jesús fuera menos importante que los ángeles, ahora Jesús ha recibido gloria y honor.

¹⁰Dios hizo todas las cosas para él mismo, y quiere que su gloria la compartan todos los que lo aman y obedecen. Para eso, Dios tenía que hacer perfecto a Jesucristo y dejarlo morir, pues Jesucristo es el Salvador de ellos. ¹¹Todos los que aman y obedecen a Dios son sus hijos, y Dios es padre de todos ellos. Y como Jesús también es Hijo de Dios, no se avergüenza de tratarlos como hermanos, ¹²pues él le dijo a Dios:

«Cuando mi pueblo se junte
para adorarte en el templo,
yo les hablaré de ti,
y te cantaré alabanzas.»

¹³También dice:

«Confiaré en Dios.»

Y añade:

«Aquí estoy, con los hijos
que Dios me ha dado.»

¹⁴Nosotros somos seres de carne y hueso. Por eso Jesús se hizo igual a nosotros. Sólo así podía morir para vencer al diablo, que tenía poder para matar a hombres y a mujeres. ¹⁵Con su muerte, Jesús dio libertad a los que se pasaban la vida con miedo a la muerte. ¹⁶Queda claro que Jesús no vino para ayudar a los ángeles, sino a todos los descendientes de Abraham. ¹⁷Para poder ayudarlos, tenía que hacerse igual a ellos. Por eso Jesús es un Jefe de sacerdotes en quien se puede confiar, pues está lleno de amor para servir a Dios. Además, por medio de su muerte, Jesús logró que Dios nos perdonara nuestros pecados. ¹⁸Y como Jesús mismo sufrió, y el diablo le puso trampas para hacerlo pecar, ahora, cuando el diablo nos pone trampas, Jesús puede ayudarnos a todos.

Jesús y Moisés

3Hermanos, Dios los ha llamado a ustedes para que sean su pueblo elegido. Por eso, pónganse a pensar seriamente en quién es Jesús: ¡Él es nuestro apóstol^[c] y nuestro Jefe de sacerdotes! ²Dios le encargó que nos ayudara, y él lo obedeció, así como Moisés también obedeció cuando Dios le ordenó ayudar a todo su pueblo.^[d]

³Pero Dios le dio a Jesús más honra que a Moisés. Es como cuando se construye una casa: el que la construye es más importante que la casa misma. ⁴Toda casa ha sido construida por alguien, pero Dios es quien ha hecho todo lo que existe. ⁵Moisés sirvió a Dios y lo obedeció en todo, pues ayudó al pueblo de Dios tal como se le ordenó, y anunció al pueblo lo que Dios iba a decir en el futuro. ⁶Pero Cristo, que es el Hijo de Dios, es obediente y ayuda a este pueblo de Dios, que somos nosotros. Y nosotros somos parte de ese pueblo, si seguimos creyendo firmemente y con alegría en la salvación que recibiremos.

La obediencia

⁷Por eso hay que hacer lo que el Espíritu Santo dice:

«Si hoy escuchan la voz de Dios,
⁸no sean tercos,
como aquellos israelitas,
que no quisieron obedecerlo
en el desierto.
Ellos quisieron ver hasta dónde
soportaría Dios su desobediencia.

»Por eso Dios les dijo:
⁹Aunque los traté bien
durante cuarenta años,
sus antepasados
me pusieron a prueba en el desierto.
¹⁰Entonces me enojé,
y les hice ver
que vivían en el error,
pues no obedecían mis mandamientos.
¹¹Por eso, ya enojado decidí:
“No voy a permitirles
entrar en la tierra prometida,
donde los habría hecho descansar.”»^[e]

¹²¡Cuidado, hermanos! No piensen en lo malo, ni dejen de confiar en el Dios que vive para siempre, para que no se aparten de él. ¹³Al contrario, mientras aún queda tiempo, cada uno debe animar al otro a seguir confiando. Así nadie dejará de obedecer a Dios, ni pensará que, si peca, hace el bien. ¹⁴Al principio, cuando confiamos en Cristo, nos hicimos compañeros suyos; y si no dejamos de confiar en él, seguiremos siendo sus compañeros siempre. ¹⁵Por eso la Biblia dice:

«Si hoy escuchan la voz de Dios,
no sean tercos,
como aquellos israelitas
que no quisieron obedecerlo.»

¹⁶¿Y quiénes fueron los que escucharon a Dios y no quisieron obedecerlo? ¡Pues todos aquellos que Moisés sacó de Egipto! ¹⁷¿Y con quiénes estuvo Dios enojado durante cuarenta años? ¡Pues con los que pecaron y luego cayeron muertos en el desierto! ¹⁸¿Y a quiénes les juró Dios que no les daría descanso en la región de Canaán? ¡Pues a los que no le obedecieron! ¹⁹Y en verdad, no pudieron entrar en Canaán y descansar, porque no confiaron en Dios.

4Por eso, mientras siga en pie la promesa de descansar con Dios, debemos tener cuidado. Sería una lástima que alguno de ustedes no pudiera recibir de Dios ese descanso. ²Porque nosotros oímos la buena noticia, igual que aquellos israelitas que salieron de Egipto. Sólo que a ellos no les sirvió de nada oírla, porque no creyeron en el mensaje. ³Nosotros, en cambio, los que sí hemos creído en la buena noticia, disfrutaremos de la paz y de la tranquilidad que Dios nos ha prometido. Pero a los que no creyeron, Dios les dijo:

«Por eso, ya enojado decidí:
“No voy a permitirles
entrar en la tierra prometida,
donde los haré descansar.”»

Dios dijo esto, refiriéndose a su descanso cuando terminó de crear el mundo. ⁴Porque en alguna parte de la Biblia se habla así del día sábado:

«En el séptimo día
Dios descansó de todo su trabajo.»

¹⁴But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

¹⁵For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

¹⁶Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

¹⁷If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

¹⁸If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

¹⁹I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

²Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

³Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

⁴Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

¹³But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

¹⁴Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

2Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

²For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;

³How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

⁴God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?

⁵For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak.

⁶But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man that thou visitest him?

⁷Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

⁸Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.

⁹But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

¹⁰For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

¹¹For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,

¹²Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.

¹³And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.

¹⁴Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

¹⁵And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

¹⁶For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.

¹⁷Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

¹⁸For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

3Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;

²Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

³For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

⁴For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.

⁵And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;

⁶But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.

⁷Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
